Social media management is a real business you can start with a laptop and one client. You plan and post for businesses that don't have time to. Start with one kind of business you know. Sell a simple monthly package. **Never take a client's passwords**: have them connect their own accounts to your tools. Count your tool costs per client and build them into your price. The steps below walk through each part.

## What a social media manager does

A social media manager keeps a business showing up online. The work usually includes:

- Planning what to post each week or month.
- Writing captions.
- Making or editing photos and short videos.
- Scheduling posts so they go out on time.
- Replying to comments and messages.
- Sending a short report each month.

You don't have to do all of it. Many managers start with planning, writing, and scheduling, and add the rest as clients ask for it.

## Step 1: Pick who you help

Choose one kind of business you understand: restaurants, salons, real estate agents, gyms, or local shops. You learn what works once and use it again. Owners in the same field talk to each other, so referrals travel. And specialists usually charge more than people who do a bit of everything.

## Step 2: Build one simple package

Decide exactly what the client gets each month:

- Which platforms (two or three is plenty to start).
- How many posts a week.
- Who makes the photos and videos: you or the client.
- Whether you reply to comments.
- What the monthly report covers.

Then say it in one sentence a client can repeat to a friend: "Three posts a week on Instagram and Facebook, written and scheduled, with a short report every month."

## Step 3: Set your price

Most managers charge a set amount each month (a retainer), not by the hour. It's easier to sell, and you get paid for results instead of minutes.

Published 2026 pricing guides put beginner packages at about **$300 to $800 a month** per client, and fuller small-business packages at about **$500 to $1,500 and up**. Where you land depends on your area, your niche, and how much you do.

- Add a one-time setup fee for connecting accounts and building the first month's plan.
- Pick month-to-month or a short minimum, like three months, and write it down.
- Build your tool costs into the price. A good check: one client should more than cover all your tools.

## Step 4: Get access without passwords

Asking for a client's password is risky for both of you. Platforms can lock an account that suddenly logs in from somewhere new. Two-step login codes go to the client's phone, not yours. And if you ever part ways, every password has to change.

Instead, have the client connect their own accounts to your scheduler. They sign in to each platform themselves and give permission to post. They can take that permission back any time, and nobody shares a password.

In **Unbusied**, you send the client a **Client Link**. They tap Connect next to each platform and sign in. The accounts land in their Social Set, ready for you to schedule.

YouTube has its own rules about managers. If a client's channel won't connect, see [How to connect a YouTube channel you manage](/guides/connect-youtube-channel-you-manage).

## Step 5: Count your tools per client

Your scheduler is usually your biggest tool cost. Work it out per client before you set prices, and look past the first month: tiers, profile caps, and seat fees are easy to ignore at 3 clients and hard to live with at 15, when a new plan shows up mid-growth.

**Unbusied** is $33/month per client (one Social Set each), with room for you and four more people, the client included, and unlimited posts (except X posts with links, 30 a month). So the math never changes shape: 3 clients is $99, 10 is $330, 40 is $1,320. Build $33 into every package and your tools are covered. More in [how to choose a scheduler as a social media manager](/guides/social-media-scheduler-for-social-media-managers).

## Step 6: Land your first clients

- Start with businesses you already buy from. You know their product, and they know you.
- Show your work: a sample month of posts for a real local business, or your own account.
- Offer a first month at a set price, not free work. A paid first month tells you the client is serious.
- Ask every happy client for one referral.
- Join the local groups where owners spend time: the chamber of commerce, business groups, neighborhood pages.

## Step 7: Report every month

Clients keep paying when they can see the work. Keep the report short: what went out, which posts did best, how followers changed, and anything you'd try next month.

Clients also want to know when people are talking to them. In Unbusied, **comment roundups** can email the client a daily or weekly count of new comments on their posts, even if they never log in.

## Common questions

### How much should a beginner social media manager charge?

Published 2026 pricing guides put beginner packages at about $300 to $800 a month per client. Charge by the month, not the hour, add a one-time setup fee, and make sure one client more than covers your tools.

### Should I ask clients for their social media passwords?

No. Have them connect their own accounts to your scheduler instead. They sign in themselves and give permission to post, which they can take back any time. In Unbusied, a Client Link does this in a few taps.

### What tools does a new social media manager need?

A scheduler, a simple design tool, and a way to send invoices. Keep the scheduler cost per client predictable: in Unbusied every client is $33 a month, with you, your helpers, and the client included.

### How many clients can one social media manager handle?

It depends on the package. Three posts a week with no replies takes far less time than daily posts, videos, and comment replies. Start with one or two clients, track your hours for a month, and price the next one from what you learn.
