Why YouTube didn't use your custom thumbnail
How to tell this is the problem
- Your video posted, but YouTube shows a frame from the video, not the thumbnail you made.
- In Unbusied, the post's page says YouTube Didn't Use the Thumbnail.
- In Settings, the channel's account row says Custom thumbnails are off for this channel.
The video itself is fine. Only the thumbnail is missing.
Step 1: Check your channel (about 30 seconds)
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio as the channel.
- Click Settings at the bottom left.
- Click Channel, then Feature eligibility.
- Look at Intermediate features. If it says Enabled, you're set. If not, go to Step 2.
Step 2: Turn on intermediate features (about 2 minutes)
- On the same Feature eligibility screen, open Intermediate features and click Verify phone number. (Or go straight to youtube.com/verify.)
- Choose a text message or a voice call, and enter your phone number.
- Type in the code YouTube sends you.
That's it. The next video Unbusied posts to this channel gets your thumbnail, and the warnings in Unbusied go away on their own.
Step 3: Fix the videos that already posted
YouTube doesn't go back and add thumbnails to videos that posted before you verified. For each one, open the post in Unbusied and click Set It in YouTube Studio. That opens the video's details. Click the thumbnail box and upload your image.
Need the image? On the post's page in Unbusied, the download arrow under the video saves the thumbnail you made.
Fair questions, straight answers.
Why didn't YouTube use my custom thumbnail?
Most often, the channel hasn't turned on YouTube's intermediate features, which needs a verified phone number. Until it does, YouTube refuses custom thumbnails and picks a frame from the video. Check in YouTube Studio under Settings, then Channel, then Feature eligibility.
Does this work for YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Unbusied sets the same custom thumbnail on Shorts as on long videos, and the same rule applies: the channel needs intermediate features turned on.
Is there a limit on custom thumbnails?
Yes. YouTube gives each channel a daily limit on custom thumbnails, and a higher one once the channel has advanced features. If you hit it, the post's page in Unbusied says so, and you can set that thumbnail by hand in YouTube Studio the next day.
Do I have to verify again for each video?
No. Verifying is once per channel. After that, every video Unbusied posts gets its thumbnail.
Who has to verify: me or the channel owner?
Whoever can open YouTube Studio as the channel with full access, usually the owner. The phone number isn't shown on the channel.
