How to connect a YouTube channel you manage
Updated August 15, 2026
The plain-English version
YouTube has two kinds of “manager.” Managers added in YouTube Studio can only use the Studio website. They cannot connect the channel to any app, including Unbusied. Managers listed on a Brand Account (in Google Account settings) can. The catch: many Brand Account channels now manage their people inside Studio too, and those managers can’t connect either. The steps below show how to check which kind you have, and how the owner fixes it in a few minutes.
Why your manager role may not work
When a channel owner invites you in YouTube Studio (Settings → Permissions), you get access to the Studio website. That is all. YouTube does not let Studio managers sign in to other apps for the channel. No scheduling tool can work around this. It is YouTube’s rule for everyone.
The kind of manager that does work is a manager listed on the Brand Account itself. A Brand Account is a shared Google account made for a channel or business. It can have many owners and managers, and each one signs in with their own Google account. When you connect YouTube to Unbusied, Google shows you a list of accounts to choose from. Brand Account channels you manage show up in that list.
One more wrinkle: even a Brand Account channel can move its people list into YouTube Studio. When that happens, its managers become Studio managers, and they lose app access too. Step 1 shows how to tell.
Step 1: Find out which kind of channel you have
The owner signs in to Google and opens myaccount.google.com/brandaccounts. Three things can happen:
- The channel is not listed. It’s a personal channel. Go to Step 2.
- It’s listed, and its details page has a “Manage permissions” option. Great. Skip to Step 3.
- It’s listed, but the Users section only links to “manage access to your YouTube channel.” The channel manages its people in YouTube Studio. See “If your channel manages people in Studio” below.
Step 2: Move the channel to a Brand Account (owner, ~5 minutes)
- Sign in to YouTube as the channel owner and open youtube.com/account_advanced.
- Click Move channel to a Brand Account. Google will ask for your password again.
- Choose Create a new Brand Account and keep the channel name the same. (Avoid moving onto a Brand Account that already has a channel. That replaces the old channel’s content.)
- Read the warnings on screen and confirm. The move can take a few minutes.
Your videos, subscribers, and playlists all move with the channel. Nothing is lost. One note: the channel cannot be moved again for 7 days.
Starting a brand-new channel instead? Create it at youtube.com/channel_switcher. Channels made there start on a Brand Account, so there is nothing to move later.
Step 3: Add the manager
- The owner opens myaccount.google.com/brandaccounts and picks the Brand Account.
- Click Manage permissions and invite the manager’s Google email.
- Choose the Manager role. (Not “Communications manager”: that role has no YouTube access.)
- The manager accepts the invite from the email Google sends.
No “Manage permissions” option? The channel manages its people in Studio. The next section covers that.
If your channel manages people in Studio
Open YouTube Studio as the channel, then Settings → Permissions. If you see a people list there, with a note about going “back to managing permissions in your Brand Account,” this is your situation. Google’s own docs say these Studio roles “can’t manage via YouTube APIs,” so they never show in the account chooser. Two ways forward:
- Simplest: the owner connects the channel. The owner signs in to Unbusied and connects it once (Step 4). After that, the whole team posts through Unbusied. No permission changes needed.
- Or switch back to Brand Account roles. The primary owner opens Studio → Settings → Permissions and clicks opt out of permissions in YouTube Studio. That returns people management to the Brand Account. Note: the Studio roles are removed when you opt out, so re-add your people as Brand Account managers (Step 3). Then connect as in Step 4.
Step 4: Connect the channel in Unbusied
- In Unbusied, open Settings for your Social Set and click + Add account → YouTube.
- Sign in with YOUR Google account (the manager account).
- On Google’s “Choose an account” screen, the managed channel now shows as its own entry. Pick it.
- Grant the permissions. Done: the channel is connected.
Common questions
Why can't I connect a YouTube channel I manage?
YouTube has two kinds of manager. Managers invited through YouTube Studio can only use the Studio website. Google's own docs say they "can't manage via YouTube APIs," which means no app access. Only managers listed on the Brand Account itself, in Google Account settings, can connect the channel to apps like Unbusied. This is YouTube's rule, and it is the same for every scheduling tool.
I'm a manager on a Brand Account, but the channel doesn't show when I connect. Why?
Your role probably lives in YouTube Studio, not on the Brand Account. Many Brand Account channels have moved their people list into Studio (Settings then Permissions). Studio roles do not appear in Google's account chooser, even on a Brand Account channel. The owner can switch back: in Studio, open Settings, then Permissions, and click "opt out of permissions in YouTube Studio." Then they add you as a Manager on the Brand Account in Google Account settings.
What is a YouTube Brand Account?
A Brand Account is a shared Google account built for a channel or business. It can have more than one owner and manager. Each manager uses their own Google sign-in. When a channel lives on a Brand Account, any of its managers can connect it to apps.
Will moving my channel to a Brand Account lose videos or subscribers?
No. Your videos, subscribers, playlists, and watch history all move with the channel. The channel keeps its name. One note: after a move, YouTube locks the channel from moving again for 7 days.
Do YouTube Brand Accounts still exist?
Yes. Google now nudges owners to switch Brand Accounts to regular accounts, and new channels are personal by default. But Brand Accounts still work, and they are still the only way for more than one person to connect a channel to apps. If your team needs that, keep the Brand Account.
What are the Brand Account roles?
There are three. Owner: full control, can add and remove people. Manager: can run the channel and connect it to apps. Communications manager: comments and some community features only, with no channel access. To connect a channel to Unbusied, you need Owner or Manager.
Google suggests switching my Brand Account to a regular account. Should I?
Not if other people need to connect or help run the channel. The switch is permanent, and it removes the manager roles. Only the single owning account could connect the channel after that.
What if the owner would rather not move the channel?
That works too. The owner connects the channel to Unbusied once, signing in as themselves. After that, everyone in the Social Set can schedule and publish to it. The owner is only needed again if Google asks for a fresh sign-in later.
Do my team members need a YouTube role to post through Unbusied?
No. Once the channel is connected, being a member of the Social Set is all anyone needs. Unbusied handles the publishing; YouTube roles don't matter after the connection is made.
